Does anyone work anymore?
I feel like automation is taking over the world. Everywhere you call, there’s an automated message. You can’t even talk to a real person anymore. And don’t even get me started on self-checkouts at grocery stores. What ever happened to good old customer service? And when something goes wrong, we’re the ones who have to figure it out.
It seems like there’s no need for human workers anymore. We can bag our own groceries and check ourselves out. So why are there still 5–8 workers just standing around in every store? Wouldn’t it be more efficient if they were actually working the cash registers? I feel like I’m doing all the work while they’re getting paid. It’s not fair! Where have all the workers gone?
I even got told from my bank to do everything online because I don’t need to go into a branch anymore. Unless I am literally depositing cash, I can do everything myself online. So why do they even have branches? And when you do call customer service, you’re lucky if you can get a human on the line. Most of the time you’re stuck talking to a machine. My phone has a timer and I have literally waited over one hour to talk to someone. It’s insane.
And why do we need people and not robots? Here’s just one example. I belong to several groups on Facebook. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been put into “facebook jail” because the AI “police” see me posting the same content into several groups and it assumes I am spam, which it is not. They are relevant groups — yet who can you talk to? No one. There is no number to call or email to write to. You just have to sit and wait until “however or whatever” gets around to resolving this. Yes, it could be weeks. And I have Facebook and Instagram business pages, which are all affected while this takes place.
My instagram was just hacked the other day. Again, who can you speak with? No one. I go through the motion of trying to verify who “I” am, with video capturing my face from front, side, etc. and it repeatedly tells me that it cannot verify me. So now what?
Normally I wouldn’t even care, however, this hacker is now contacting “my” contacts trying to scam them also. That is not ok. I even wrote from another Instagram account and tagged @pattybaronowski to inform people to not listen to this scammer who is posing as me, as it is NOT me and they are trying to scam them. What did this do? Believe it or not — Instagram wrote to me and said they were removing that post because it was violating their policies. Can you believe that?
Another prime example. I went to the store the other day and could not find something on a shelf. Now, this particular store in the past, you could go to the customer service counter and they could look on the computer to see if they actually have the products in stock or not and if not, even tell you if any of their other stores have it, so you could go get it there. This time, however, the customer service woman just told me to go check other isles. Seriously? Yes, seriously. I walked around and could not find it anywhere. I walked all the way back and told her again that I could not find it anywhere. She just shrugged and said, “then I guess we don’t have it.” Wow — I was shocked.
I was in Walmart the other day and went to the self check-out again, sincere there is only 2 cashiers in this entire store and that line was a mile long. When I was scanning my items, I noticed one item did not have a price on it. I asked one of the 5 workers there who just stand there getting paid to scan in their code if you mess up something at the register yourself. I told her it did not have a price tag. In the past, they would have either gotten on the walkie talkie to that department and asked for a price check, or even go back there themselves and checked the price. What happened this time? She told me, “well, if it doesn’t have a price I guess you can’t get it.” I was beyond shocked. I replied, “Seriously? You can’t radio back there to get a price?” of which she replied, “Like I said — if it doesn’t have a tag, you can’t get it.” I was beyond shocked. She’d rather lose a sale than do her job and get a price????
Then in the store another day, I needed assistance. I waited for over 15 minutes and no one came. I saw two workers walking and I was coming up behind them saying, “Excuse me. Excuse me. Come someone help me??” in which they couldn’t not hear me, but instead, just continued walking away. Well, I eventually walked back and just got something else. As I was at the cashier, of which this store actually had a live cashier (I was 2nd in line and there were 4 more after me) we were stuck there because the person before me paid cash and he forgot to return his change. Apparently ,he couldn’t open the cashier again unless someone else was paying cash. As it so happened, myself and everyone behind me was paying with a credit card, so now what? He had to call the manager several times on the radio to ask her to come and open his register. Well, after waiting there for 15 minutes (and with one cashier, you can imagine the line), would you believe this manager was the same woman who was walking away from me when I was chasing her and the other down the isles asking for help.
Is this what our world has become? No one wanting to work? I wish I could say it is improving, but sadly it is not. All I see around me are people who just don’t want to work and everywhere everything turning to self-service or automation. That is not the future I am looking for.
