What is ageism? Ageism refers to the stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel) and discrimination (how we act) towards others or oneself based on age. Who does ageism affect? Ageism affects everyone. Children as young as 4 years old become aware of their culture’s age stereotypes.
It can take three main forms: Stereotypes, or preconceived beliefs about the ways age affects interests, personality, and abilities.
Ageism is discrimination or unfair treatment based on a person’s age. Ageism can occur in employment, housing, education, and other areas of life. It can be difficult to identify ageism because it often manifests as subtle forms of discrimination. For example, an employer may avoid hiring older workers because they believe they will be less productive than younger workers. Or, a landlord may refuse to rent an apartment to an elderly person because they think the person will be unable to take care of the property. Ageism can have a negative impact on a person’s quality of life and ability to live independently. It is important to be aware of ageism and its effects so that we can work to eliminate it from our society.
There is no doubt that ageism exists in today’s workforce. More and more people over the age of 50 are finding it difficult to get hired for jobs, simply because of their age. This is a form of discrimination that needs to be addressed.
Ageism can have a negative impact on someone’s career, preventing them from getting the jobs they want and deserve. It can also lead to lower wages and fewer opportunities for advancement. This type of discrimination is unfair and should not be tolerated. Ageism can happen in many different areas of life, including employment.
If you believe you have been a victim of ageism, there are steps you can take. You can file a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission or your state’s fair employment agency. You may also want to consult with an experienced employment discrimination attorney to discuss your legal options.
Unfortunately, ageism is a reality for many older job seekers. Age discrimination can make it difficult to get hired, even when you are qualified for the position. Why is this happening? Many reasons. Fear of being usurped. A zero-sum game mentality about inclusion. Ignorance. Infantile first points of contact in talent management. A transactional recruitment agency attitude of Human Resources. Millennial hiring managers privilege and prejudice. “They” cost too much… the shareholders…, etc. And frankly, there is an element of fear you’ll wipe the floor with others professionally if you’re hired.
I feel that perhaps employers are afraid that they will not be able to push you around, the way they might be able to push around a college graduate who needs the experience for their resume. Sadly, I would think employers would prefer the years of experience and knowledge that you can bring to the table and not be pushing that aside for someone with 2-3 years’ experience. I, myself, have applied for jobs that I was beyond qualified for, and seeking the exact same salary as the 25 year old, but have been turned down with the excuse, “We were very impressed by your skills and background, however, we want to go with someone with 2-3 years’ experience at this time.” How is that considered “experience” in comparison to 30 years? And I was willing to work for the exact same salary.
Here are some tips for dealing with ageism in your job search:
– Don’t let age define you: Age is just a number and should not be used to define who you are as a person. You are more than your age and should not let it hold you back from achieving your goals.
– Be confident: Show employers that you are confident in your abilities and that you have the skills and experience they are looking for.
– Stay positive: Ageism can be frustrating, but it is important to stay positive throughout your job search. Remember that there are employers out there who value older workers and who will be excited to have you on their team.
– Keep networking: Networking is a great way to connect with potential employers and to learn about job openings. It can also help you combat ageism by showing employers that you are active and engaged in your field.
– Be persistent: Don’t give up on your job search just because you’ve encountered ageism. Keep applying for jobs and networking with potential employers. Eventually, you will find an employer who is excited to have you on board.
If you have experienced ageism in your job search, don’t let it discourage you. There are ways to combat ageism and to find an employer who values your skills and experience. Keep these tips in mind and you will eventually be successful in your job search.
Stay strong. As the saying goes…..this too shall pass…..and you will come out stronger in the end because of it. Keep shining bright!! The right position will present itself and welcome you wish open arms. If employers are pushing you aside because of your age – always remember – you are better off not working for an Employer with such shallow values anyway. Be true to you and the right employer will sweep you off of your feet.
